How To View The ESRI 2008 User Conference Technical Presentations

NACS distributes ArcGIS in two levels of capability - ArcEditor and ArcInfo. ArcEditor includes:

  • ArcMap
  • ArcCatalog
  • ArcGlobe
  • ArcScene
  • Extensions - 3D Analyst, ArcScan, Geostatistical Analyst, Maplex, Network Analyst, Publisher, Schematics, Spatial Analyst, Survey Analyst and Tracking Analyst.
ArcEditor provides the functionality that most UCI users will need. ArcInfo includes ArcEditor functionality and advanced geoprocessing and data conversion capabilities as well as tools for operating in a shared data editing environment. ArcInfo requires a hardware key (one-time fee from NACS) that is installed on the computer running the software.

Details of the major software items are as follows:
  • ArcMap is used to view, edit, analyze and process spatial and tabular GIS data, as well as to design and construct maps using GIS data.
  • ArcCatalog is used to manage GIS data sources.
  • ArcGlobe allows viewing of global GIS data.
  • ArcScene is used for viewing GIS data in 3D and allows viewers to essentially "fly" over the landscape.

Our Higher Education Package includes ESRI Data & Maps 2006 (see http://www.esri.com/library/whitepapers/pdfs/datamaps2006.pdf for details).

Other software included with the site license are:

  • ArcGIS Server - an Internet-based GIS that employs ArcGIS-based GIS functionality. This utility requires much development time.
  • ArcIMS - an Internet-based utility that allows Internet users to perform basic GIS operations with your GIS maps and data layers.
  • ArcPad - for use with hand-held computer devices.
  • ArcInfo Workstation - Unix-based original ArcInfo software.
  • ArcSDE - Spatial Database Engine for managing GIS data stored in a formal database; principally for enterprise-wide applications.
  • ArcReader - a utility, similar in concept to Adobe Acrobat Reader, for viewing map products generated with ArcGIS software. The concept is that users of ArcGIS construct and save map products using ArcPublisher then publish or distribute those map products along with ArcReader for anyone to view. ArcReader is free to anyone and can be downloaded from the ESRI web site.

A special code or password is needed to obtain or use this software.

Product description: ArcGIS is a scalable system of Geographic Information System software that provides high-quality desktop visualization, query, analysis, integration, and geographic data automation capabilities.
